The Sun and Your Skin

Effects of UV

Exposure to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays affects the skin and eyes over time. Some effects are beneficial - such as the production of Vitamin D - while others can cause damage.

When UV radiation damages skin cells beyond their ability to repair themselves, they can become cancerous and develop into Basal or Squamous cell carcinoma or melanoma. Damage from UV rays also produces skin damage including wrinkles, sun spots, and freckles in the skin, which lead to premature aging. Repeated exposure to UV light can also damage your eyes and cause macular degeneration, cataracts, and melanoma of the eye which can impair vision permanently.

There are many Prevention Strategies you can use to decrease your risk of damage from UV rays - remember to Go Sun Smart!
